About
General

KNOWCRIME is an organisation that promotes crime awareness throughout communities in Durban and surrounding areas.
The key aim of the organisation is to empower citizens by exchanging information about current crime trends, and educating and mobilising the public to be proactive about their safety.
Crime is no longer a government concern but it is a problem that affects every single South African. The biggest challenge is the culture of apathy that has crippled our society.

At KNOWCRIME, it is the belief that in order to control the crime situation more successfully, there needs to be a shift in mindset from a reactive approach to one that is proactive in nature.
Recognising that the SAPS cannot prevent crime alone, safety and security requires the collective support and responsibility of all individuals in the community which includes civilians, business as well as community organisations.

KNOWCRIME began initially as an online neighbourhood watch with updates on crime trends in the different areas of Durban. Through the realisation that not everyone has access to the internet, KNOWCRIME has endeavoured to reach the broader public through the KNOWCRIME newsletter, the online Facebook community and a SMS crime alert system.

The KNOWCRIME organisation is headed by 23 year old Nishen Naicker, an honours Criminology graduate of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The rest of the team consists of a group of passionate criminology volunteers, drawn from different cultural and social backgrounds, who are also students at the University.
Together they aim to share their knowledge and inform their communities through the use of school programmes, township programmes and community policing forums. By mobilising the volunteers in different areas, the organisation aspires to bring about a greater shift in attitudes towards crime. This is the KNOWCRIME pledge, to support communities and watch them grow, and sustain the belief of “Together we can!”.
The steps we take today, shape the path we walk tomorrow, and what better way than to arm the youth of today, who will be our future of tomorrow?

KNOWCRIME welcomes any support from the community in any form, whether it just be dedicated time or donations for events and campaigns. Find out more by searching KNOW CRIME on Facebook.

SAFETY IS NOT JUST YOUR RIGHT, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!

Thank you!

Would it be fair to describe what the SAPS does as old apartheid policing dressed up in new clothes ?
